16 Kids.....

Wow. I just watched On the Road with 16 Kids on TLC. It is exactly what it sounds like. The Duggar family from Arkansas (where else?) has 16 (count 'em!) children, and TLC paid for them to go on a month-long vacation -- in an RV! They seem like a genuinely nice family, and all of the kids are well cared for, but it's just a little creepy.

Of course, they are all home-schooled. I think that's a requirement for families with 7 or more children. They have tons of chores, which can be a good thing. The older ones care for the younger ones. I just wonder if they have any social interaction outside of their own family.

Oh, and all of their names begin with J. The dad is Jim Bob (no lie). I am placing bets that the next one will be named Jesus.

Summer Lovin'

I love winter. I am a girl that is happy in jeans and a sweater, and I love the coziness of being indoors when it's cold and yucky outside.

For some reason, it feels like summer was eons ago. This winter has stretched on far too long. Every day is grey and rainy. I find myself dreaming of shorts and sandals, getting a tan (or a burn, in my case), and summer highlights. I've already planned out what we are doing each week of the summer, as though it can't get here fast enough. I am ready to lay out by the pool and soak up some of those rays.

Enough of the 40 degree dreariness!

Sad Day for Horseracing

Barbaro died today. For those who don't know, he was the horse that won the Kentucky Derby last May by a dozen or so lengths. He was to be the next super-horse, the next shot at a Triple Crown winner. In the Preakness two weeks later, he took a bad step and shattered his right hind leg. After multiple surgeries and screws, he was stabilized, but always on the brink of danger.

Horses need equal weight on all four legs. That is why so few survive a broken leg. Barbaro developed laminitis in his back left leg, and had to have 80% of the hoof removed.

After 8 months, several setbacks, and no real shot at walking again with a natural gait, his owners and vet decided to put him down. They made the right decision, although a very tough one.

RIP, Barbaro.

Post one. Un. Uno. First. Primero.

Uhh....

I think it's more fun leaving comments on other people's blogs. Then there's no pressure. If I don't write for a week or so, no one notices. If I have my own blog, people start to expect regular updates. My life is not that interesting. I doubt I could write regularly. I didn't even keep a diary growing up. I tried, but I gave it up after 2 or 3 days, because I was bored with it.

So we'll see how this goes.
